Thank you Candy, David, Pat and Carol for organizing a great 45th Reunion.  It was wonderful to be in Carmi for Corn Day!  It had been 40 years since we had been.  We walked down main Street and talked about places that were special to us .  Sad they are no longer there.  It was really nice talking to everyone on Sat night!  I will be looking forward to seeing you all in 5 years!   May God Bless you all !

What a great weekend.  Corn Day has changed a bit since we were "kids" and road or marched in the evening parade.  It was great to walk down main street and see fellow classmates (class shirts helped too!).  We were not able to make it in time for the Friday get together but very much enjoyed Saturday.  Seemed to run out of time before we ran out of people to visit with.  Thanks to all those who worked hard to put this reunion together.  Am looking forward to our 50th.  My one request is for everyone to relearn our high school fight song so I am not the only one singing in the back of the float!!!  Will try to post some pictures if I can figure out how!

Robert L. Wilson, president and owner of Les Wilson, Inc., has been honored as the American Solutions' 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year from Illinois.

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and general chairman of American Solutions, recognized Wilson at an American Solutions awards dinner Sept. 23 at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, D.C.

"He talked with us for about 30 minutes," Wilson told The Times of the group of 50 state winners honored. Each winner was asked to share his thoughts with the former Speaker, and Wilson said he expressed the need for lawmakers to create incentives to encourage the exploration for oil and gas in the U.S.

Gingrich said it's important that the resources already present in this country be used, as well. And he said he's looking for ideas that can be used to turn the country around.

Wilson, who runs the company his grandfather founded in 1939 and his father ran for years, said Les Wilson Inc. is now operating four rotary rigs (with a fifth likely to begin work soon) and ten service rigs in five states. The company has about 180 employees and has more than doubled in size in the last few years.

"The biggest reason we're doing so well," said Wilson, is that I made a change in my life. I was saved and I'm now following Jesus."

The Abby’s are doing great.  As you can see from the picture we now have 6 grandsons and a foster granddaughter.  They hope to adopt her but things are not looking very positive for that right now.

Even though Darrell is retired, he works as much as possible as a flight simulator instructor.  Had Delta not discontinued  their retirement obligations he would be fully retired flying his remote control airplanes which is now his new obsession.  He still finds time to do woodworking upon requests.

I am playing tennis 3-4 times a week and feel extremely blessed to be able to do so after tearing my Achilles tendon from my heal bone and having it reattached with a screw.  All our grandkids are in Houston and I spend a lot of time there.  Photography has become a new hobby for me pushing the embroidery slightly back.

Church, family, friends, and hobbies keep us busier that we have ever been.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting caught up on all the latest news.  The feature of letting us know when new information has been added is great.  Keep up the good work Candy and hope more will add updates to where/what they are now doing.

I just started getting e-mails from this site and reading all the e-mails everyone has been submitting. I saw some from last year regarding the passing of my dad. Thanks for those kind words. Jan, Keith and I do miss him. Mom is still going and Keith is now in Carmi living and taking care of mom. We are still in Mukiltoe Washington (20 miles north of Seattle) and still working. Looks like Anita will retire next March and me, I am moving from a 12 month contract to a 10 month contract with July and August off. If that gets old then maybe I will retire from this job as well. I plan to come to Carmi sometime in July or August for couple weeks to see mom and Keith. Next month doing a vacation with Jan and her husband John. We are all doing the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion and National Monument. Anita and I did a simular trip a few years ago and really enjoyed ourselves. Anita and I took Jan and John to Canadian Rockies (Jasper/Banff/lake Louise) last year and they really enjoyed that so we decided we would do another trip this year. I think next year we will take them to Alaska.  Our boys are still not married. Adam (29 today) still living in Seattle working and doing his music. Scott (30) still in Souel Korea teaching english and attending a University there getting his Korean language certificate and playing soccer. He did come home this year for a couple of months (December and January). It was really a treat to have him home. Anita's mom spends the winters here with us, she is 85 but in great shape with no health issues other than hearing aids. Anita and I are doing just fine health wise as well. I am still very active with running, biking and backpacking. The northwest is such a great spot for outdoors activities year round and working at a University makes it easy to stay in shape. I look forward to see more e-mails and keeping up with everyone. Technology makes it so easy to stay in touch.

Megan Milligan, a history major with a minor in sociology, is the 2009 recipient of the Dain Garrett Merit Award for a junior or senior history student who has overcome a significant obstacle.

The award was established by Dain Garrett, who graduated from USI in 1999 with a perfect 4.0 GPA despite a long struggle with muscular dystrophy. After graduation, he went on to complete a master’s degree from California State University Dominguez Hills, passing away just prior to receiving his degree.

As a USI student, Garrett won many of the prizes awarded by the USI History Department, and upon his graduation, he used his award money to establish this annual cash prize to assist students who struggled against physical, economic, or other hardships. Garrett was the son of Connie Pitzer of Evansville and Don Garrett of Carmi.

In the past two years, Milligan has been a leader among history majors, and currently serves as the president of the History Club. Her experience outside the classroom has been extraordinarily diverse; after studying abroad in Russia, Ukraine, and Estonia, she returned to Evansville and took up an internship with the Evansville African American Museum. This experience turned into a life plan, as she now intends to go to graduate school with plans to work for similar museums in the future.

Contributions to the Dain Garrett Merit Award are accepted by the USI Foundation

Sandy Kalb sent me your link. Loved looking at it and I'll have to bug him to write something.

A few days after Sandy graduated from H.S. I waved good-bye to my big brother as he, Luther, and Walley left together for the Air Force. Within weeks I moved to Liberty, NY.

I now was a southern girl in the Catkills Mts. attending H.S. in Liberty, NY. I missed my Carmians. It wasn't until I returned to IL to attend SIUC that I ran into some friends who also began college at C'dale. It's been 40 years and I would love to see how our class of students matured. Do you know if the Class of '68 has a web sight or address? Whatever you suggest would be helpful. If you can keep my email address on file for upcoming events, etc., I would appreciate that too.

Congratulations on such a beautiful web sight and a job well done. It's true devotion. Good luck and one day my husband & I plan to attend Corn Day ourselves. Ray Storey (67) and I have remained close friends and he talks about it all the time. Ray & Terry live in Mt. Zion, IL and their daughter was married Sept. 20th. Past Director Rennels is president of Shelby Skipwith Inc. representing York International and is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Four Seasons HVAC Dist. Inc. A member of the Jonesboro Nettleton Lions Club since 1987, Past Director Rennels has held many offices within the association, including club president, zone chairman, district governor and council chairman. He has served as a presenter, moderator and discussion leader at previous USA/Canada Forums and was a member and later chairman of the Leadership Committee. He also served on the Executive Committee for the USA/Canada Forum 2000 and is a member of the USA/Canada Forum Planning Committee for 2002. At the 85th International Convention, held in Osaka, Japan, July 8-12, 2002, Past Director Rennels was appointed to serve on the Long Range Planning and Public Relations committees by the International Board of Directors. John Earl Spencer - class of '67 - is having ear surgery.  They lost one of the titanium tubes within the inner canal of his left ear drum, with no promise of recovery, but at least are attempting to recover it.  They will be operating on the his other ear drum , replacing the titanium tube with a T- titanium tube. He will be using hearing aids as the loss is neural as well as structural.  With any surgery there are always risks involved and we wish John the best for his recovery!!

He has done a terrific amount of work on the class of "67 website And it certainly looks great! 

I received an email from Sharon requesting prayer for her dad who is going to have open heart surgery AGAIN.  He had triple bypass surgery 10 years ago, but is now looking at replacing the aorta valve.  The valve should be 2 to 3 centimeters, his is .5 centimeters.  I should have put this on our website sooner but....He is having the surgery today -July 31, 2008.   He always said he would not let them cut his chest open again, but when you hear you have a 50-50 chance of living 3 years and could have a stroke at any time you reconsider the options.  The surgeon said he was in good health for 83, other than the valve and gave him a 93 to 95% chance of a successful surgery.  He is concerned about blood clots and all the complications associated with surgery.  This was a very difficult decision for Gib, so I am asking that you all keep him in your prayers.  Gib is such a wonderful person! 

Sharon didn't ask me to put this here but, I am sure she would appreciate your thoughts and prayers for him to have a successful surgery and a quick recovery!

Schanzle family donates artifacts to museum

INDIAN ARTIFACTS - Bob Schanzle, left, one of the children of the late George Schanzle, donated a large number of Indian artifacts to the White County Historical Society Museum in Carmi Monday afternoon. Also attending the presentation at far right was Ellen Schanzle-Haskins, one of George's daughters. The children of the late George Schanzle have donated a number of Indian artifacts owned by their father to the White County Historical Society Museum in downtown Carmi.

The late George's children are Jim Schanzle of Carmi, Bob Schanzle of Chatham, Ill., Ellen Schanzle-Haskins of Springfield, Ill., and Julie Schanzle of Mountain City, Tenn. George was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Charles "Chuck" Schanzle, a Carmi dentist for many years.

George Schanzle, who died on his 92nd birthday March 29 this year, was president of White County Bank for more than 50 years and was active in scouting. His sons, Bob and Charles, became Eagle scouts and George was bestowed the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given to adults in scouting.

The artifacts donated, while not professionally catalogued, are representative of cultures ranging from the Archaic period (8000 to 500 B.C.), to Woodland (500 B.C. to 1000 A.D.) and Mississippian (1000-1400 A.D.).

"These items reflect the continuous occupation of White County by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the European 'discovery' of the New World," a document accompanying the artifacts said.

Some of the items were given to George by friends and others were purchased from clients of the bank.

Members of the White County Historical Society thanked the Schanzle family for the donation and reported to The Times that donations continue to come in, giving the museum a nice selection of inventory.

Pat Gross, left, is handing over the keys of her 18-year-old business, Pat's Porch, at 320 E. Main St. in Carmi, to Sherry Gholson.  

Pat took a dream and made it into a successful business!  She began her business of selling home decor items some 18 years ago on her rural Concord porch before moving into her Carmi location at 320 E. Main St. in 1992.

Now, she says it's time to do other things, and she's sold the business to Sherry Gholson, who assumes ownership Tuesday.

Pat and her husband, Keith, have two grown sons and five grandchildren. Pat said she plans to spend time continuing her custom home painting and decorating service and with her horses.

"And most importantly, I plan to spend time babysitting my grandkids," she beamed. "I appreciate the loyalty of my customers over the years and I hope to see them Tuesday and Wednesday to help me wish Sherry well as she takes over the business."

Pat, we are proud of you and your accomplishments and we wish you much more enjoyment in the next chapter of your life!!

Just got off the phone with Pam. She had wonderful news. She has been accepted to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Teaching and Research Institute in Houston, Texas. She will be leaving sometime next week and will spend a week or so at the Institute.

She really appreciates those of you who have offered your thoughts and prayers, and is always eager to hear from old friends. She has the courage and strength necessary to wage this intense battle. I ask that your thoughts and prayers be with her during this time of tribulation and offer her the support she needs.

Pam has finished her chemo for her lung cancer and is recuperating at home. She is attempting to gain back her strength from the treatments and plans to vist the Oncology Center at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. for a second opinion. The chemo therapy had caused several residual effects for her such as a minor stroke, blood clots in her legs, and depleting crucial minerals as well as lowering her white blood cell count. She has been through a very rough time but has maintained a tremendous attitude. I'm sure she would like to hear from you all. Candy, thanks for setting up this site.  I too was shocked to see how many classmates had died.  I enjoyed looking at the reunion pictures and was sorry I was unable to attend.

I am still living in Nashville, IN and a nurse at Columbus Regional Hospital.  I have permanent custody of my godson who is now 16--no one our age should be raising teenagers!!!  What a challenge. 

I am also the current Scoutmaster of our Boy Scout troop.  They are a great group and help to keep me young.

Don't get to Carmi much since my Dad passed away 2 years ago.  Hope to be there for next Corn Day reunion!!

Thanks for letting me know about this web site. We couldn't attend the reunion because my husband couldn't get off work on short notice. Maybe by the next one we will be retired.

  You probably know I just live across the river in Mt Vernon IN. but don't get to IL. very often since my parents passed away. Not many relatives left in IL. Merle and I have been married 36 years and have one son Josh who is 20. We keep busy working. I am a nurse and Merle works at SABIC formerly GE.   He has retired from GE but continues to work for SABIC. Oh well enough. So good to read about you all.

Candy, I couldn't help but visit your site when I saw it posted on the Carmi Times Guestbook.  I thought I would "drop in" to be the curious cat even though I graduated in the Class of '67.  I hope someone in my class will sponsor such a great site.  You certainly have given it style and effort, and I would imagine other Classes of Carmi High will wish to pay a visit.    I haven't been to the Midwest since 1999...so maybe I will make the trip for 2012.  I see so many friends and those that I went to church with as a child; it is endearing to reflect on those days and remember the friendships.  Good Luck for 2011!  You need not place this on the website unless you wish; it is written to you as a thank you for such a great resource to revisit from time to time.

Having gone from Kindergarden through almost our Sophomore Year before having to leave Carmi, I was thrilled to see this website and be able through pics to see some friends from too long ago. Graduated High School in Ohio, then back to Illinois for a time before becoming a resident of Kansas since 1972, where I practice Civil Engineering. Have a wife, 3 kids (one deceased), 4 Grandkids, 5 Step Grandkids. Drive through Carmi every few years and wonder if I could recognize anyone and now maybe I can with this great site. Thanks for the great work and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
