Louise Browning, 91, of Carmi, Illinois, died Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born December 10, 1924, in Gallatin County, Illinois, the daughter of William and Ada (Ramage) Trousdale. She was married to Mark W. Browning on February 4, 1941, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 2013 

  Louise was a member of the New Beginnings Church of God in Carmi. Her work career included working at Ainsbrooke Corporation (the “factory”), and as a sales clerk at Maxine’s Dress Shop, and later, Mary Ann’s Dress Shop. She later sat with people in their homes. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, cross stitching and quilting.

Survivors include son Dennis Browning, of Carbondale, Colorado; daughter Glenda (Darrell) Hankins of Carmi; grandchildren Louis Hankins, Jana (Jeff) Bradshaw, Jill (Ben) Talley; great grandchildren Kayleigh Hankins, Evan Talley, Ava Talley, Olivia Talley, Broden Bradshaw, Ethan Bradshaw and Sharea (Nate) Overman; great great grandchild Ren Overman.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Larry Browning; a sister and two brothers.

Visitation and funeral are Thursday, February 18th, at the New Beginnings Church of God in Carmi. Visitation is at 11 am and funeral is at 1 pm. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery. Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Edward Barbre, 92, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 11:20 p.m. at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He was born to William Edward and Charlotte (Springer) Barbre on June 20, 1923 in Venice, Illinois. Harry married Mildred Fern Hart on September 27, 1947.

When Pearl Harbor was attacked, Harry chose to enlist in the Marine Corps for the length of World War II. After basic and special forces training in artillery, he served in Guadalcanal, Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima where he was present for the raising of the famous flag. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant.

Harry served as Carmi’s Chief of Police and owned the Sani Cream in Carmi. Later he was the parts manager at the Chrysler auto dealership in Carmi. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing, drinking coffee with his “buddies” at McDonalds, telling war stories, and using his talent for small engine repair at his lawn mower repair service. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Carmi.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Larry Beck and Sharon and Rex Stallings all of Carmi; three grandchildren, Kara Kessler and husband, Curt, Shannon Nausley and husband, Lex and Jason Stallings and wife, Crystal; and seven great-grandchildren, Kelsi Kessler, Cody, Travis and Kassie Nausley, and Samantha, Sydney and Jordan Stallings. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, and two sisters.

Funeral services for Harry Barbre, 92, of Carmi will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Greg Grant and Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden in Carmi with full military rites by the Carmi American Legion and VFW. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.

Mildred Barbre, 87, of Carmi, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 8:40 a.m. at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born on August 4, 1928 in Enfield, IL, the daughter of Cecil and Ruby (Newman) Hart. Mildred married Harry Edward Barbre on September 27, 1947. She was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi and a sixty year member of First United Methodist Church in Carmi where she sang in the choir. Mildred was also a member of Wesleyan Service Guild. Mildred worked as a secretary at Carmi Savings and Loan and later becoming branch manager of Olympic Federal Savings and Loan.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Harry; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Larry Beck and Sharon and Rex Stallings all of Carmi; three grandchildren, Kara Kessler and husband, Curt, Shannon Nausley and husband, Lex and Jason Stallings and wife, Crystal; and seven great-grandchildren, Kelsi Kessler, Cody, Travis and Kassie Nausley, and Samantha, Sydney and Jordan Stallings.

Elaine Foster, 70, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2015 at 7:35 a.m. at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN. She was born on October 21, 1945 in Carmi, IL, the daughter of William Leonard and Alberta (York) Foster. Elaine graduated from Carmi Township High School in 1963. She was the director at Carmi Public Library for 46 years and a member of Enfield General Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister, Emilie Foster of Carmi; two nephews, Charlie and Michael David; two great-nieces, Makayla and Paisley David; a great-nephew, Andrew David; cousins, Greg (Karen) Ulery, Kathy Jo Wright-Blakemore and Mike and Scott Wright; and extended family, Debbie and Rick Duckworth, Mike and Joie Jordan. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother-in-law, Coy David.

Gilbert (Gib) Frier passed away on Thursday in Evansville IN.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Jean; children, Sharon Poshard

And Gib Frier;  five granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren;

three great-great-grandchildren and a brother, Harry Frier.

Mark Wayne Browning, 91, of Carmi, died Sunday, February 17, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born January 4, 1922, in Heralds Prairie Township, White County, the son of Fred and Effie (Aud) Browning. He married Louise Underwood on February 4, 1941, and she survives.

Mark was a farmer and an active member of the Church of God in Carmi. He was an avid musician and mastered various stringed instruments and the harmonica. He also had a passion for his horses.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Browning of Carmi; son Dennis Browning of Carbondale, Colo.; daughter Glenda (Darrell) Hankins of Carmi; sisters Julia Pettijohn of Norris City, Katherine Coston, Maxine (Bob) Hancock, all of Carmi; grandchildren Louis Hankins, Jana (Jeff) Bradshaw, Jill (Ben) Talley; great grandchildren Kayleigh Hankins, Evan Talley, Ava Talley, Olivia Talley and Broden Bradshaw.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son Larry Browning; and sister Vernell Bates.

Visitation and funeral are Wednesday, February 20, at the Church of God in Carmi. Visitation is at 11 a.m. and the funeral is at 1 p.m. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Brownsville.

Paul Pollard, 91, of Carmi, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. He was born January 31, 1921 in White County, the son of Ellis Ray and Emma June (Lamp) Pollard. Paul married Helen Elizabeth Miller November 15, 1941 and she preceded him in death January 10, 2007.

Paul was an Army veteran of WWII, serving as a medic, and was at the Battle Of The Bulge. Paul was a farmer and a founding member of the Community Church near Carmi.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Don Pitzer of Evansville, Ind.; four sisters-in-law, Grace Shook, Eleanor (Vernon) Hubele, and Ethel Stallings all of Carmi, and Carole Pollard of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Harry Ashworth of Tulsa, Okla.

Paul was preceded in death by his grandson, Dain Garrett; a sister, Berniece Erkman; and two brothers, Dean and Marion Pollard.

Funeral services for Paul Pollard, 91, of Carmi, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Joe Skaggs officiating. Burial will be at Bruce Chapel Cemetery near Carmi. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mildred Louise Bachman, 91, of Carmi, Illinois, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. She was born March 12, 1921, in Carmi, the daughter of Orlando B. and Bertha (Smith) Renshaw. She was married to Arthur Bachman and he preceded her in death on December 27, 1986.

Mildred was an active member of the First Christian Church in Carmi. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a cook at Brownsville School and also worked a short time at Ainesbrooke Corporation in Carmi.

Survivors include sons Albert (Shirley) Bachman of Liberty, MO, Louis Bachman of Tremont, IL, David (Rhonda) Bachman of Carmi; daughter Lyndall (David) Flanagan of Texico, IL; nine grandchildren, Jody, Crissy, Eric, Matt, Brian, Jeremy, Ashley, Shelby, Emma; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter-in-law Ida Mae Bachman; granddaughter Misty Michelle Bachman; brother Elvis Renshaw and his wife Vonda; sisters Ruth Elder and her husband Dee, Florence Renshaw, and Irene Terrell and her husband Chalen.

Keith D. Finch, 61, of Carmi, passed away at 11:27 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at his residence. He was born October 31, 1951 in Fairfield, the son of Robert Vernon and Doris Louella (Cagle) Finch. He was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.

Keith had a quick wit and lived a life that reflected loyalty to his friends and generosity in helping others. He spent most of his work career in Oklahoma and Florida. When he returned to Carmi, he focused on helping with the needs of his aging parents until their deaths. A man of many skills, he enjoyed his leisure reading and cooking with a creative flare.

Keith is survived by a sister, Janice (John) Talbott of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Jerry (Anita) Finch of Snohomish, Wash.; and a granddaughter, Anneleya Marie Finch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Zack Finch.

* A gathering to honor the memory of Keith Finch will be held from 2 until 4p.m. on Saturday, December 1st at the Carmi American Legion.   Harold Leon Terry, 87, of Carmi, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born February 10, 1925, in Carter Nine, Okla., the son of Bufford Clifford and Sarah Velma (Hill) Terry. On December 20, 1947, he married Helen Seitz and she survives.
Leon enjoyed his family and was an active member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he served in several capacities. For 60 years, he was the owner and operator of Big Four Welding Company and was known as "the best backhoe operator in the area." He was a member of the Carmi Lions Club and a past president. Among his pastimes were bowling, boating, water sports, camping, reading (western novels), working with stained glass, jigsaw puzzles, computers and communicating with his friends on Facebook and e-mail.
Anyone who ever met him would know that he was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. No matter how you were involved in his life, he knew you loved him and he loved you.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Terry of Carmi; son Bill (Linda) Terry of Winter Park, Fla.; daughter Susan (Michael) Cohen of Brewster, N.Y.; sister Peggy Whetstone of Carmi; sister-in-law Arline Terry of Alabama; grandchildren Travis David (Wendy) Terry, Jennifer Nicole Terry, Stephen Garrett Cohen, Brett David Cohen; great grandchildren, Mason Terry, August Terry and Allison Terry.
Other survivors include several nieces and nephews, Lois (Steve) Hendrix, Joanne (Scott) Hart, Darin (Debbie) Whetstone, David (Karen) Whetstone, Sarah (Randy) Newlin, Gary (Teresa) Terry, Joe (Brook) Terry, Terry (Rogene) Toler, Loretta (Craig) Stalnaker, and Robin Terry.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Vera Toler and infant Faye Terry; brothers Clifford Cleo Terry and Lawrence Terry; brother-in-law Forrest Toler; sister-in-law Sue Terry; and nephews Dennis Terry and Gene Toler.

Helen Lucille Behler Matsel, 86, of Carmi, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 4:15 a.m. at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born July 23, 1925 in Carmi, the daughter of Ben J. and Hattie Victoria (Puckett) Behler. She married Ted H. Matsel August 4, 1946 and he preceded her in death October 23, 2008. Helen was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi, where she was active in the Fellowship Sunday School class and the Quilters and Crafters organization. She also belonged to the DAR and American Legion and VFW auxiliaries.

Helen is survived by her four children, Martha (Ed) Geppert of Belleville, Judy (Rob) Coleman of Mt. Carmel, Mary (Tom) Ossowski of Springfield and Jack (Karen) Matsel of Jasper, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Brad (Laurie) Geppert, Steven Geppert and Daniel Geppert of Belleville, Ben (Alison) Coleman of Decatur, Phil Coleman of Mt. Just wanted to let all of you know that my mom, Helen Matsel, passed away at 4 o'clock this morning at Wabash Christian in Carmi.  She had been their three years after a terrible fall in July of 2009 in which she hit her head on a concrete sidewalk and had to have emergency brain surgery.  She is now at peace.  Her visitation will be Monday morning from 10-12 and funeral at 12 at Campbell's.

Ida Belle Smock, 86, of Mt. Carmel, formerly of Carmi, passed away at 6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 at the home of her daughter in Mt. Carmel.

She was born Oct. 27, 1924 in Burnt Prairie, the daughter of Richard and Hazel (Utterbach) Masterson. She married Lowell Pollard Dec. 25, 1942, and he preceded her in death March 17, 1957. She then married Wilburn Burke Smock Feb. 18, 1958, and he preceded her in death April 25, 2003. She was a member of Stewart Street Baptist Church in Carmi. She enjoyed gardening, church and cooking. She loved her family and friends, gardening, church and cooking. She had been a cook at Carmi High School. She also taught Bible school.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Mike Steckler of Mt. Carmel; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl Ray and Cora Lea Pollard of Scott, La.; a sister, Faye Pollard of Burnt Prairie; two sisters-in-law, Dean Masterson of Mt. Carmel and Mildred Masterson of Fairfield; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilford and Norma Masterson of Fairfield, Richard and Freida Masterson, Dan and Barb Masterson, and John and Paula Masterson, all of Burnt Prairie; a brother-in-law, Bailey Fulton of Arcola; seven grandchildren, Lisa Steckler, Julie Steckler, Becky and Will Boerner, Susan and Charlie Pedersen, Janet Pollard, Michael and Susan Pollard, and Steven Pollard; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Carl Pedersen; and a special friend, Art DuSablon of Carmi. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Lee Pollard; a son, Kenny Joe Pollard; three sisters, Edith Masterson, Mary Irene Moore and Audrey Fulton; a granddaughter, Stacey Steckler Sprinkle; and two brothers, Ray and Gene Masterson.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at Stewart Street Baptist Church in Carmi, with the Rev. Roger Balfour officiating. Burial will be in East Antioch Cemetery near Burnt Prairie. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. I was very saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I had talked to him fairly recently, and he was really looking forward to being at the weiner roast on Friday night of reunion weekend. He was not going to be able to be there on Saturday, because he had made plans to take his Grandaughter to New York to see some Broadway plays. It was great to have seen him at the last reunion. He will be missed.

Tommy Lee Collins, 62, of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. He was born in Vandalia, IL on December 28, 1948 to Elza and Mary Lou (Cook) Collins.
Tom was a 1966 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and then went on to graduate from DePauw University. He retired from the Marine Corp as a Colonel. Tom started his career as a math teacher at Mt. Vernon High School and was later Vice Principal and a coach. Tom then became the Director of Information Technology for the MSD of Mt. Vernon before moving on to Plato Learning. He was currently a Sales Manager with Apex Learning. In 1966 he was a Kiwanis Award winner and was later inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame. Athletics remained an important part of his life especially watching his grandchildren's sporting activities. He was an avid golfer and loved filling his home with his family.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Tom is survived by his wife of 6 years, Juli (Butler) Collins. He was formerly married to Brenda (Russell) Snelling and is survived by their children, son, Geoff Collins and his wife Crystal; daughters, Julie Jackson and her husband Neil; all of Mt. Vernon, Jenny Alger and her husband Ryan of Wethersfield, CT; mother, Mary Lou Collins; and step daughter, Jenna Korn both of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Alex, Damon, and Demi Collins, Mitchell and Collin Jackson, and Ella and Abby Alger; brother, Bill Collins of Mt. Vernon and Jim Collins and his wife Jeryl of Sugarland, TX; sister, Mary Ann Burris and her husband Steve of Mt. Vernon; niece, Erica Collins-Egan; and nephews, Bryan and Logan Collins.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Vogel of Mt. Vernon, and the staff at Cleveland Clinic.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 9, 2011 at First United Methodist Church 601 Main St. in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Tim Ahlemeyer and Pastor Mark Tabor officiating and burial to follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Lilly Mae Bridgeman, 86, of Carmi, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at the Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville, Ind.

Lilly was born May 30, 1925 in New Haven, the daughter of Howard Elmer and Dorothy Marie (Melton) Clifford. She married Kelly Ray Bridgeman on Dec. 10, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 2008. Lilly was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi and was a homemaker and cake maker.

Lilly is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Art and Patti Bridgeman of Louisville, Ky., Dennis Bridgeman of Carmi, Rod and Sheila Bridgeman of Louisville, Ky., and Jeff Bridgeman of Carmi; two sisters, Mary Lou Gibbons of Galatia and Louise Faye Gasaway of Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernie and Faye Clifford of Franklin, Tenn., and Howard and Nancy Clifford Jr. of Brookport; six grandchildren, Allen Bridgeman and his wife Amy of Indianapolis, Ind., Kimberly Lucas of Lakeland, Fla., Bryan Bridgeman of Carmi, Christopher Trulock and his wife Christy of Park City, Ky., Dawn Pickrel and her husband Bruce of Glasgow, Ky., and Heather Hardman and her husband Matthew of Louisville, Ky.; and 13 great-grandchildren, Jarrod, Jessica, Katherine and Elizabeth Bridgeman, Katie and Kyle Porter, Stephanie and Eric Lucas, Caitlyn and Cameron Trulock, and Olivia, Matthew and Danny Hardman.

William W. Walker, 72, of Carmi, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at his home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1938, in Epworth, the son of Wayne A. and Imogene (Ohl) Walker.  On Feb. 3, 1973, he married Beverly Quinn, and she survives. He was a welder and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Walker of Carmi; a son, Alex Walker of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Kathleen Hendrickson and her husband Don, and Robin Cooper and her husband David of Stonefort; and an aunt, Christine Schneider, and her husband John of Carmi.

He is preceded in death by both parents, Wayne and Imogene Walker.

Doris M. Upton, 83, of Carmi, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

She was born June 8, 1927, in Herald, the daughter of Alva and Pearl (Harvey) Hoy. She married John Upton, and he preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Upton was a homemaker who worked briefly at Ainsbrooke as a seamstress. She attended church in Herald.

She was born May 7, 1930 in Maunie, the daughter of Thomas Marion and Edith Mae (Pollard) Simmons. She married John Lee James Jr. on April 21, 1947, and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2001. Mrs. James was a homemaker and member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Russell F. Terrell, 86, of Carmi, passed away Jan. 1, 2011, at Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Carmi.

He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Fairfield, the son of Frank and Hattie (Atteberry) Terrell. He married Joan Bills on May 5, 1945 in Northampton, England, and she survives. Russell graduated from Fairfield High School and attended Southern Illinois University before enlisting for military service, serving with the 303rd Bomb Group.

Mr. Terrell was an electrician who owned and operated Terrell Electric from 1967 until his retirement in 1984. He continued to work for several years after transferring the business to his son. He was a member of the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a member of Concord Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joan of Carmi; a son and daughter-in-law, Mervyn and Gail Terrell of New Haven; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bill Hall of Concord, Debbie and Roy Dill of Newburgh, Ind., and Laurie and Randy Frashier of Maunie; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Shelley and Mitch Wilson of Raleigh, N.C., Jason and Jennifer Hall of Anna, Heather Wheeler of Carmi, Hollie and Kirby Damery of Carmi, Hilary and Paul Morgan of New Haven, Chad Dill and Katie Dill, both of Newburgh, Ind., Erin and Ian Haley of Carmi, and Eli Frashier of Maunie; nine great-grandchildren, Madison Wheeler, Lexi Wheeler, Annabelle Morgan, Ethan Morgan, Emslee Damery, Kyle Hall, Kaylee Hall, Jake Smull and Oliver Wilson; and many other relatives and friends.

She was born April 1, 1928, in Grayson County, Ky., the daughter of Ed and Melvina (Duvall) Stinson. She was married to Robert William Maxfield, and he preceded her in death.

Velma was a homemaker and member of the former General Baptist Church in Maunie, where she taught Sunday school for many years. After the Maunie church ceased to exist, she attended Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church in Rising Sun. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. For 15 years, she worked at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.

Survivors include a son, James Edward Maxfield and his wife Jan of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Renia Hill and her husband Rick of Slidell, La., and Gayla Kombrink of McLeansboro; three brothers, Irwin Harold Stinson and his wife Doris, and Guy Dale Stinson, all of Carmi, and Ralph Stinson and his wife Linda of Madison, Wis.; two sisters, Katherine Vercruyse of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Paula Dagley and her husband Jim of Carmi; six grandchildren, Bobby Maxfield, Kristie Lucky, Jeremiah Hill, Jamie Maxfield, Jodi Maxfield and Jessica Stephens; several great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Ray Stinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph Edward Bozarth, 87, Benton, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 at Franklin Hospital in Benton.

Mr. Bozarth was born at Thompsonville on June 28, 1922, the son of Peter Eligah and Angie Eason Bozarth.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European theater as a field artillery gunnery sergeant. Beginning with the Normandy landing, he was awarded five battle stars, one for all five major European battles of the war. He was also awarded three Silver Stars and one Bronze Star with Oak Clusters, awarded to him personally by Gen. Omar Bradley. Upon completion of his military duty, Mr. Bozarth returned to Franklin Count, where he was reintroduced to the daughter of his rural grade teacher. Ralph and Ramona Hall were married April 27, 1946 in McLeansboro, the beginning of a 59-year union. Ralph, a lifelong Baptist, retired in 1987 after 33 years of service to the Southern Baptist Organization. He served as farm manager for the Baptist Children's Home in Carmi and 16 years overseeing maintenance and procurement at the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, La. During his time at Carmi, Ralph became recognized as an instinctive and innovative farmer, helping to introduce the Canadian/European Landrace pig breed into America. He was also instrumental in conjunction with seed producers and farm equipment companies in introducing the now commonplace practice of "no-till" crop production. He was recognized as an authority on the procedure, participating in seminars and meetings across the eastern U.S. Ralph was a proud and loyal veteran and citizen, always proud to tell anyone of his service and America's contribution to victory in WWII. He was a lifetime member of local VFW and American Legion posts. He flew the American flag in his yard until the very end, zealously guarding the display and condition of the flag.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae; a sister, Shirley Bozarth Harvey of Effingham; a son and daughter-in-law, R. Duane and Norma Jean Bozarth of Longview, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Alan Hughes of Overland Park, Kan.; and a son, Bradley Eligah Bozarth of Kansas City, Kan. Ralph is also survived by six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bozarth was preceded in death by his mother and father; a sister, Pauline Bozarth Thomas; and his wife, Ramona, who died Dec. 2, 2005.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, Dr. Gladys Herzog officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 29, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Memorials to Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Eleanor Funkhouser, 87, Carmi, died at 12:19 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Ind.

She was born May 20, 1922, in White County to Alpha and Mildred (Anselment) Orman and married K. Wayne Funkhouser April 20, 1946, who survives.

Eleanor was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi and worked at First National Bank in Crossville and as a bookkeeper for Finch Ford and York Fiscus Chrysler Plymouth, retiring in 1977 after 13 years of service.

Among her survivors are: two daughters, Jeanna Funkhouser, Hermitage, Tenn., and Nancy (Darrell) Abby, Bedford, Texas; three half-brothers, James Meriwether, Fairfield, Homer Meriwether, Evansville, Ind., and Harold Meriwether, Carmi; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one foster great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by: two half-brothers, Elmer Meriwether and Paul Orman; and two half-sisters, Sophia Joy Pringle and Janet Sue Meriwether.

Bonnie O. Dennis, 78, of Carmi and formerly of Herald, went to meet the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. Her loving family was at her side.
Bonnie was born May 28, 1931, in Oilton, Okla., the daughter of Elroy and Odessa Bevel, both of whom preceded her. She married James R. "Benny" Dennis on June 22, 1947, in a double ceremony with lifelong friends, Betty and Clinton Clark of rural Carmi. Benny and Bonnie were lifetime owner and operators of several service stations and restaurants in Carmi, serving the community and the surrounding areas for over 50 years. Benny would do the cashier and public relations and Bonnie the cooking and the hiring and firing (alongside sons Barry and Tony). Benny preceded her in death on July 28, 1994. She attended local churches in Carmi - Mercy Gate and World Harvest Christian Center.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Gloria Dennis of Herald, and Tony and Stephanie Dennis of Carmi; two sisters, Diane Stanhope of Mt. Sterling, Ky., and Marsha Pritchard of McLeansboro; four precious grandsons, Benjamin Dennis, Brock Dennis, Keegan Dennis and Matthew Broom; four precious granddaughters, Tiffany (nee Dennis) Porter, Shelda (nee Dennis) Noto, Jennifer McCormick and Kathleen A. Buchanan; 11 great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and her loving dogs at home, Sassy, Albert and Baby.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Friends and family shared and visited from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 in the funeral home chapel. Pianist Belva May opened the service with a hymn, followed by the Rev. Debbie Dolan leading the congregation in prayer. Members of Bonnie's family then shared memories of her with those who attended. The Mitchell Family performed "Shout To The Lord" and "How Great Is Our God." Pastor Stephen Norris then read from scripture, and the Rev. G. Frank May delivered the sermon and closing prayer. The service ended with "I Can Only Imagine" by The Mitchell Family and the piano playing of Belva May.
Stephen Porter, Bob Dolan, Benjamin Dennis, Brock Dennis, Keegan Dennis and Matthew Broom served as pallbearers at White County Memorial Garden, where Bonnie was buried. Former Carmi High school teacher, Gary L. Harrison, 74, McLeansboro, died at 5:30 a.m.Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at HamiltonMemorialHospital in that city.

He was bornMarch 30, 1934 in Mt. Vernon, Ill., the son of W.O. and Sara (Garrison) Harrison, and was married July 2, 1966 in McLeansboro to Sharon Jo Morris. Mr. Harris taught at CarmiCommunityHigh School for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post 106 at McLeansboro and Elks Lodge 1882 at McLeansboro.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon, of McLeansboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Wilma Harrison ofCentralia; and a granddaughter, Hannah Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Harrison was cremated at his request. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at1 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at GarrisonCemetery at Aden, the Rev. Alan Monroe officiating. There will be no visitation. Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro is in charge of arrangements.

Emily P. Savage, 86, Burnt Prairie, died at 12:24 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 at Way Fair Nursing Home in Fairfield.
She was born Dec. 2, 1921 in Phillips Township, the daughter of Paul and Cleanthia (Myers) Winter. She was married March 8, 1941 to Harry Owen Savage, and he preceded her in death Dec. 26, 1979. Mrs. Savage was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Burnt Prairie and the Order of the Eastern Star in Enfield.

Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Deanna Short, and Barbara and Danny Masterson, all of Burnt Prairie, and Janet Stewart of Wadesville, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Judy Savage of McLeansboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Dean and Don Plummer of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Glen Harold and Ann Winter of Harrisburg; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Owen Savage; a sister, Lois Anderson; a brother, Norman Winter; and a granddaughter, Michelle Masterson.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, the Revs. Tim Collins and Ruby McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Georgianna Hutchcraft, 81, died Nov. 24, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville.

 Kevin Hughes, 47, Carmi, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008 while working at the family farm.
He was born Aug. 25, 1960 in Carmi, the son of Houston and Virginia (Gidcumb) Hughes. He was a 1978 graduate of Carmi Community High School and a member of Kingdom Baptist Church.
Surviving are his parents, Houston and Virginia Hughes of Carmi; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and John Keller of Fayetteville, Ga., Tina and Steve Riley of Owensville, Ind., and Debbie and Jim Stevens of Nederland, Colo.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David and Gay Hughes of Carmi, Bill and Lynn Hughes of Harrison, Ark., and Doug Hall of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

 I'm sure many of you remember Mr. Matsel from school and from the many things that he contributed to our community. He left a wonderful legacy for his family and everyone who knew him!

Ted H. Matsel, age 83, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi, Ill.
Ted was born in Carmi, Ill. on March 6, 1925, and, except for his military career, lived in Carmi his entire life. He graduated from Carmi High School in 1943. He earned a bachelor's degree from Murray State University in Murray, Ky. and a master's in education degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign.
Ted was a veteran of World War II. At the age of 18, he entered military service on April 2, 1943 as an aviation cadet. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps of the United States, receiving his wings and commission on Jan. 7, 1944. After receiving his wings and commission, Lt. Matsel was stationed in England and assigned to the 8th Air Force, 729th Bomber Squadron, 452nd Bomb Group as the co-pilot on a B-17G aircraft. Lt. Matsel was shot down by German forces on his third bombing mission and captured by German troops on May 29, 1944 close to Gran Leez, Belgium. He was a prisoner of war for 11 months and was liberated by the 14th Armored Division of General Patton's 3rd Army on April 29, 1945. Lt. Matsel was the recipient of three battle stars in the European Theatre of Operations. Lt. Matsel was separated from active duty in November of 1945. He remained active in the Air Force Reserve and was promoted to first lieutenant, serving for approximately ten years.
Ted married Helen Behler on Aug. 4, 1946 at Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church in Carmi.
Ted was a career educator for 35 years, retiring in 1983. His teaching career began in Crossville, Ill. in 1948 where he taught at the high school for three years. In 1951, Ted accepted a teaching position in the Carmi school system and taught for 15 years. In 1963, he developed a junior high program at Washington School for the Carmi public school system and was the principal of that program for 18 years. During his career as an educator, he served and chaired numerous committees, including service as a board member of the Illinois Education Association for eight years.
Ted was very active in civic and community affairs during his lifetime. He was a member of the Carmi Kiwanis Club, Carmi American Legion Post 224 and Carmi Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3851 for over 60 years, and was a past president and post commander of those organizations. In addition, he was a member of the White County Historical Society and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. In his adult life, Ted was also been involved in numerous education, military, government, religious and civic organizations and activities.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Helen Matsel of Carmi; one son and daughter-in-law Jack and Karen Matsel of Jasper, Ind.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Robert Coleman of Mt. Carmel, Ill., Mary Lynn and Tom Ossowski of Springfield, Ill. and Martha and Ed Geppert of Belleville, Ill.; a brother and sister-in-law, Col. Paul E. "Gene" and Helen Matsel of Carmi; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard "Dyke" and Jewell Behler, Donna Matsel and Mary Alice Brashier, all of Carmi, and Jeanette Smith of Norman, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, Brad, Steve and Dan Geppert; Dr. Ben and Phil Coleman; Leah, Allison and Jared Matsel; Dr. Kathryn Colman and Tim Ossowski; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Matsel.
Visitation was held at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Ida Mae Rush-Bachman, 55, of Tremont, Ill., died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Washington Christian Village.
She was born March 3, 1954 in Carmi to George Ervin and Anna Mae (Wilson) Rush. She married Louis B. Bachman on Aug. 1, 1971 in Carmi.
Surviving are her husband, Louis of Tremont; one daughter, Ashley Anna Bachman of Tremont; two sisters, Ruthetta (and Paul) Logan of Lincoln, and Brenda Voyles of Tremont; two brothers, John (and Judy) Rush of Carrier Mills, and William (and Bev) Rush of Springerton; mother-in-law, Mildred Bachman of Carmi; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Misty Michelle on April 2, 1988; and also aunts and uncles. She was also preceded by grandma Ida Wilson and aunt Macel Hoover, with whom she made her home.
She was a manager at Speed Way on Prospect and later at Circle-K on Knoxville, both in Peoria. She was a member of Highview Christian Church in East Peoria. She volunteered in fundraising at the Children's Miracle Network.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield, the Rev. Earl Renshaw officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Enfield. Burial will be at Bruce Chapel Cemetery near Carmi.

Mary Louise (Newman) Balance, 86, formerly of Carmi, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Fayette County Long Term Care in Vandalia.
She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Henderson, Ky., the daughter of John H. and Eunice Stewart.
Mary Louise and her husband, Burton Newman, owned and operated "Pee Wee's" Grocery on North Fifth Street in Carmi for nearly 30 years. Burton died in 1976 and Mary Louise relocated to Tucson, Ariz., where she met and married Glen Balance and remained for the next 30 years.
All who knew her will remember her as a caring, outgoing and vivacious individual who was always concerned about the welfare of others and a great lover of planning special parties for her many friends.
Survivors include: a son, Richard (Pamela) Newman of Sequim, Wash., and their son, Nicholas and wife Kelly; a daughter, Teresa (Scott) Howard of Carmi, and their sons Stewart and his wife Terri and Scott Richard and two great-grandchildren, Seth and Samuel.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at White County Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jon Farmer of Foothills Community Church in Tucson officiating. All who knew her are invited to join her family in remembering her at this time.
